The urgency to stop using plastic bags
Plastic pollution is a major threat to our planet’s oceans, with eight million pieces of plastic entering the sea every day. Plastic bags are a major contributor to this pollution, and as they become shredded, they are mistaken as food by marine animals, resulting in over 100,000 deaths yearly.
Combating the issue
As the issue of plastic pollution continues to rise, many governments are taking steps to reduce our reliance on plastic bags. On June 1st, a new UAE directive came into effect, banning the use of single-use plastic bags in the Emirate.
This new directive is part of a wider initiative to help protect the environment and reduce the amount of waste going to landfills. While there are still some exceptions, the idea of this initiative is to encourage people to use reusable products.
Research by the World Government Summit in 2019 found that an incredible 11 billion plastic bags were used in the Emirates each year. That is equivalent to 1,182 plastic bags per person each year. By banning the use of single-use plastic bags and encouraging reusable alternatives, this will see a significant reduction in the numbers being thrown away.
